What is an editor exactly? Before I came to Hollywood I didn't want to be an editor. It seemed like it would be boring to me. A Hollywood Editor? An editor that is behind the scenes putting stuff together? No way...directing was the way to go! Then I opened Avid for the first time and cut something...

An editor is a key player in a film. Some say that a movie is made in the editing room. In a way...but without a good director the editor might as well commit suicide. However, when a good director delivers good dailies to a good editor, well that is when the Hollywood magic begins to happen.

So I'm an editor. An editor in Hollywood. What does that mean? It means I'm part of a team putting dreams on the big screen. I'm the one in the dark room with an Avid, a leather couch, an R2-D2 droid and a wall full of framed movie posters. Which posters you might ask? Good question. That is important to a director. An editor needs to share the same Hollywood dream as the director.

At this time I use Avid. I'm an Avid editor - a real hollywood editor. What about Final Cut? Sure...why not. Who cares really? A Hollywood editor is about making movies, so whether I edit with Avid or Final Cut is not important. Some put a bit too much emphasis on the tool. One needs only seek a good editor here in Hollywood. That is the important part. Any production that decides on an editor based on the tool the editor uses should just give their money to a production company who actually understands Hollywood movie making. Spoken from me...a Hollywood editor.
