Avid editor vs. Final Cut editor. It is the big debate now isn't it? Especially if you are a freelance editor.

Final Cut seems to appeal to the masses in the indie world. Why? A lot is packaged together in addition to the ability to cut, and indie editors have to do a lot more than cut. Sound, FX, etc. Plus Final Cut isn't that expensive. And the other reason is that the indie film world is all about grasping on to the new and small...they are about being different. If studios today were cutting on Final Cut you'd probably see the indie world clammering to each become an Avid editor (gasp - the audacity!).

I'm an Avid editor. Why? Because that is what I learned in school. Avid editors cut most of the union films that I love and that is where I'm heading. Sure, Final Cut is probably great, but it is just like a language - you cut differently in Final Cut. As an Avid Editor I love the way Avid works so why change? Why learn to speak French unless you have to? I'm a freelance editor and cut using what I like.

The moral of the story? This editor is dwelling in Hollywood to make movies - to be a Hollywood editor. Not to be an Avid editor or a Final Cut editor. Big directors don't care what you cut on - they check imdb to see what you've cut. So at this point the best thing for me is to stay an Avid editor and keep learning to cut better.
